A little help

Keep counting.

Help with your photos, your projects, and the current Countenance beta.

Updated October 12, 2026 · iPhone, iOS 17 or later

Your first few days

  1. Choose Count today to create a project, or Bring in past selfies to import photos you already have. Sign in with Apple is optional.
  2. Allow the permissions for the features you want. Camera access takes a new photo; Photos access lets you import and save copies. Location and notifications support places and reminders.
  3. Open Timeline to review your frames, play them back, or make a film. Several photos in one day are welcome.

Common questions

The camera is unavailable.

Check Countenance’s camera permission in iOS Settings and try opening Capture again. On recent iOS versions, app permissions are under Settings → Apps → Countenance. The app uses both front and back cameras. You can also start with photos you already have through Projects → Bring in past selfies.

My import is missing photos or finds the wrong face.

With limited Photos access, Countenance can scan only the photos iOS makes available to it. Check Photos permission in iOS Settings, then try the Selfies album, Whole library, or Choose by hand. Photos stored only in iCloud may need a connection to download.

If “Show it your face” is available, provide a few clear examples. Without a usable face model or examples, a single clear face can be treated as a likely match. Inspect the review grid, including uncertain matches and photos set aside by “One per moment,” before importing. “Look harder” can find smaller faces but takes longer.

Face matching can be less capable on iOS 17. Reopen the app to resume a paused import; background progress is not guaranteed.

A frame looks tilted or the crop is too close.

Open the frame in Timeline to compare its original and aligned versions and try re-aligning. For face projects, choose Tight, Normal, or Wide framing from Timeline, project Settings, or Export. Dark photos, covered eyes, and multiple faces can be difficult to align.

Why does the app ask for Photos access after a shot?

The Photos safety net is on by default. It tries to save new captures to a Countenance album, which needs read/write library access. You can turn off “Also save to a Countenance album” in Countenance Settings. With add-only access, a copy may appear in Photos without appearing in the album.

Imported photos are already in your library and are not saved into the album again. Check that a wanted safety-net copy actually appears in Photos; a counted frame alone does not confirm that the copy succeeded.

My photos are not appearing on another device.

Open Countenance Settings and read the iCloud status. Check that both devices use the same iCloud account, have an internet connection, and have available iCloud storage. Use “Try again” if it is offered. Signing in with Apple inside Countenance does not switch on or repair iCloud sync.

Sync can be delayed or unavailable in the beta. Keep your existing installation and verify important copies before relying on a reinstall. If an error persists, send its text with your beta feedback. “Checking” or an available iCloud account alone does not prove every frame has uploaded.

My reminders stopped, or I get too many.

Open Settings → your project to adjust Daily reminder, Time, How often, and Spread. Arrival reminders have a separate switch and need a chosen place and location permission. Check Countenance under iOS notification settings and check Focus settings too.

Countenance schedules a limited number of upcoming reminders and refreshes them when you reopen the app; iOS controls background refresh and delivery. Counting a day cancels its remaining reminders for that project. Reopen the app periodically if reminders stop after several days.

How do I export a film?

Use the share control beside Play in Timeline, or “Export film…” in the player menu. Choose the project, a date range, or a day with several frames, then choose the speed and Cut or Crossfade. You need at least two selected frames to “Make the film.”

Once it is ready, use Share or Save to Photos. Saving needs Photos add permission. If export fails, check free device storage and try a smaller date range. Exports are made on the phone.

Can I fill a missed day with AI?

The current beta supports Cut and Crossfade between existing frames. Generated gap filling and cloud sharing are not available. A missed day can stay missing.

How do I delete photos, projects, or my sign-in details?

Delete an individual frame in its detail view, or use Settings → your project → Delete project. Photos-library copies and shared exports remain until you delete them separately.

Settings → Account → Sign out clears locally saved Apple sign-in details. It does not erase your library or revoke Apple authorization. Manage that authorization in Apple Account settings.

Deleting a project does not remove the person’s saved faceprints. The beta has no person/faceprint reset or complete erase-all control. Clear cache removes only aligned renders. See the privacy policy’s deletion limits before treating any of these actions as a full reset.
